Dialup Analogue and ISDN services are powered by Verizon (formerly UUNET).
You currently have the option of either 56k Analogue, 64k ISDN or 128k ISDN dialup.
Dialup access is provided by a single national phone number - find this under Quick Connect.
You can use your dial up account when travelling abroad by connecting to a local POP in many cities - contact us for more information.
Both the 56k Analogue and 64k ISDN dialup accounts can be used by either an analogue or ISDN modem.

ADSL is a permanent broadband connection to the internet. The service is delivered over your existing Telkom phone line. Line speed ranges from 384kbps to 4096kbps. To get this service you also need a DSL Router which is available from Telkom or any good supplier of computer related hardware and of course you need an access account from an ISP.

	What is Shaped ADSL?
	The shaped service prioritises keystroke activities - things you do while sitting in-front of your PC. So when you're surfing your favourite site, doing your banking online or checking you e-mail, this option will work best for you. For those of you that need to know more, read on. The shaped service distinguishes between the various protocols used over the Internet. The main priority is HTTP. At present, all international HTTP traffic is transparently cached for ADSL users. All international un-cached data is shaped. The following un-cached protocols are prioritised on the network: HTTP (in certain cases HTTP is not cached due to website incompatibilities), HTTPS, FTP, Mail (POP3, SMTP and IMAP), SSH and TELNET. Any protocol not mentioned above will receive a lower priority on the network.
	What is Unshaped ADSL?
	Whichever activity you are doing or leaving your PC to do, while not there, all available bandwidth will be used for this application or protocol. This service will offer you unshaped international bandwidth and a higher data transfer rate. The unshaped service will not shape the un-cached protocols. All protocols will therefore share the available bandwidth equally. Similarly, local bandwidth will remain as is with no shaping implemented. Keeping this in mind, this service is typically designed for a niche market including, for example, your typical Forex Trader, specific gaming applications, secure work from home options and VPN's. All these applications can use unfamiliar protocols, which are not necessarily bandwidth intensive but require an unshaped service to work optimally.
	What is ISDN?
	ISDN stands for Integrated Services Digital Network - the name for digital telephone service that works over existing copper telephone wiring. There are several types of ISDN service, but the most appropriate type for individual computer users, and the type that this site focuses on, is the ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI). Basic Rate ISDN divides the telephone line into 3 digital channels: 2 "B" channels and one "D" channel, each of which can be used simultaneously. The B channels are used to transmit data, at rates of 64k or 56k (depending on your telephone company). The D channel does the administrative work, such as setting up and tearing down the call and communicating with the telephone network. With two B channels, you can make two calls simultaneously. Most of the world's existing telephone network is already digital. The only part that typically isn't digital is the section that runs from the local exchange to your house or office. ISDN makes that final leg of the network digital.
